If any of you have checked your calendars recently, you may have noticed it is late July. Summer is almost halfway over, and bikini body season is well underway. A fitness post seems long overdue. Though that may be true, getting in shape does not have to be limited to the spring.
In the age of Instagram, swimsuit season has taken on a whole new meaning. Gone are the days of buying a $14.95 Target swimsuit every year. As if swimsuit shopping wasn’t hard enough already. Instead, all kinds of online swim brands have taken over the gram with their innovative styles and gorgeous social media feeds.
Monday night icons of style and media gathered on the Upper East Side for Anna Wintour’s annual Met Gala. Dozens of celebrities visited the Upper East Side decked out in gorgeous gowns and tuxedos inspired by the event’s theme “Comme des Garcons” french for “like some boys.” The guest list ranged from Rihanna to Tom Brady with tickets starting at $30,000 per person.
Well New York, we have certainly had a go. Your winter may not have been comparable to the arctic tundra of the Midwest, but your springs (or lack thereof) may as well be sisters.
Despite when the weather outside may be telling you, spring is around the corner (or at least I hope so). The start of spring means the start of the most loved and hated season of them all: swimsuit season.
Finding the perfect swimsuit is like finding a salaried position in media, near impossible. While I may not be able to help you with the latter, I’ve got some ideas on the former.
Valentines Day is next Tuesday, and whether you’ll be spending it across the table from someone special or curled up on your couch with a full glass of wine in one hand and a piece of pizza in the other (cough me cough), you still need something to wear.
You get out of work later than usual which puts you in a funk because your best friend is visiting. Getting home late will throw off all of your plans. You impatiently wait for the one train to take you uptown. The sign reads 4 min away, but you wait for over ten. By this time, the number of people waiting for the train has increased exponentially, and everyone is forced to squeeze on when it finally decides to arrive.
Despite it being early February, most people ignore the extra space each puffy coat takes up and pack sardine style into each subway car. You resent each new passenger boarding, your new enemies, imagining them taking pleasure in surrounding you as tight as possible. “Can’t they wait for the next one?” you wonder. You clearly can’t do that because you have important things to do. Obviously.
The winter season often gets a bad rap. It’s freezing, fallen snow means limited footwear options, and skin tones get increasingly lighter. This often makes finding the perfect outfit for a winter wedding close to impossible. Everyone is tired of the the boring little black dress and pair of tights.
The Gatsby Wedding
Instead of throwing on your old LBD, search your closet for some color. Jewel tones are flattering on almost every skin type and save you from looking like every other guest at the wedding. Adding lengths gives a touch of formality, but its simple shape and material allow the same easy air as your go to summer dress.
Important side note: shoes are always always important.
It has been said “the best part of living in a place like Manhattan is leaving it.” Whoever said that must have been a transplant. With all the things that make this city great, for those that didn’t grow up here, and sometimes even for those that did, it can be all too easy to find reasons why one would want to leave. It’s crowded, it smells, it’s expensive, people you don’t know yell at you sometimes. Just to name a few.
But even these aren’t the best reasons for getting out of the city. The greatest and strangest realization about leaving New York is recognizing the rest of the world functions just fine without it.
After spending some time amongst the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, New York has a way of creeping into your mind as the center of the universe. Imagining this attitude is much easier when you remember Beyonce lives here. Everything happens here. Everyone lives here.
To my lovely Culottes,
No one ever gives culottes enough credit. Though we haven’t been together long, I grown so close to you. It is almost like you are apart of me.
Regardless of how I am feeling that day, dressy or casual, you are always there for me, ensuring that I do not leave the house looking like a total mess.
