How to Wear Gingham and Still be Modern

I was sitting down to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants in Grand Rapids, MI.

It was a beautiful summer night, I was surrounded by great company, and I was eating root chips. Safe to say, I was pleased.

“I really love your outfit,” the server told me.

Aside from being told I look similar to Blake Lively, this is the greatest compliment you can give me. Cut me some slack. For the amount of time I spend thinking about what to wear, I should get a little credit right?

The truth about this skirt is I haven’t worn this skirt once without receiving at least one compliment on it.

The last time, I was in a target parking lot with my little sister. A mother of two passed as we were loading up the car and yelled
“Wear that skirt girl.” Trust me I lived for it.

Yes people gingham is still in, and by the sound of the feedback I have received, it’s here to stay.

If you have paid any attention to your Instagram feed this summer or have even stepped foot into a Zara, the gingham print would have attacked you on all fronts. Civilians and bloggers alike have lined up to buy ruffled gingham skirts from various fast fashion retailers.

Its positive feedback isn’t necessarily just from the skirt itself (cute as it may be), but it is mostly due to how it is styled. The amount of exposure combined with its vintage nature, this print can read dated much easier than you think, but when done right, the results are well, compliment worthy.

The key to wearing trendy pieces is differentiating yourself. Pairing this skirt with an edgy tee eliminates its tablecloth nature. The contrast between the two makes the outfit fun and separates you from everyone and their mother wearing your gingham skirt.

Plus, it will probably gain you some compliments on the way.
